  Software Licensing

The Unauthorized Copying of Software or Pirating.

Central Florida Web DesignMost retail programs are licensed for use at just one computer site or for use by only one user at any time. By buying the software, you become a licensed user rather than an owner of the software. You are allowed to make copies of the program for backup purposes, but it is against the law to distribute copies to other people.

Software piracy is all but impossible to stop, although software companies are launching more lawsuits as scare tactics. Anti-Piracy has come along way from just installing the software and accepting the user agreements. Software companies include CD keys and online registration processes to discourage pirates. However these tactics don’t stop piracy in a whole. Most pirates will even reverse engineer the registration process to allow for a software installation.

  Software Licensing

Central Florida NetworkingWhat Is a Software License?
A software license grants you the right to run or access a software program. Licensing software is different than purchasing a physical object where you have the right to run the software. These restrictions include such things as deployment eligibility, Site agreements, and how distribution to users should be handled.

Microsoft software licenses generally come with one of the two kinds of licenses which specify how you may use the software. The licenses most users are familiar with, is an End User License Agreement (EULA). If you have ever acquired a license for software from a retailer or purchased a new computer with software already installed, then you have probably seen a EULA. The EULA generally either comes in the box on paper or cardstock or pops-up onscreen when you install new software. You typically must accept the terms and conditions before installing the software. The second agreement type, Product Use Rights (PUR), is similar to the EULA except that it pertains to software licensed through a Microsoft Volume Licensing program. The PUR, together with the Microsoft Volume Licensing program agreement under which a license is acquired, governs the use of Microsoft Volume Licensing software.

  Microsoft Licensing

Central Florida Networking SolutionsMicrosoft Licensing Options:
Microsoft licenses software three primary ways: Full Packaged Product, Original Equipment Manufacturer, and Volume Licensing.

Full Packaged Product:
Full Packaged Product (FPP) is boxed, shrink-wrapped software. Licenses for this type of software are acquired through retail outlets.

Original Equipment Manufacturer or System Builder:
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and System Builder software licenses are acquired when you buy a computer with software legally preinstalled. Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows are examples of this type of software. If you have ever purchased a computer from the store with Windows installed, you have acquired a license for OEM or System Builder software. The following are some useful links to determine if your OEM licensing is legit:

Volume Licensing:
Microsoft Volume Licensing programs may be the right choice for your organization if you need multiple copies of Microsoft software. Volume licensing is a flexible and economical way to acquire from five to thousands of licenses for software. Microsoft Volume Licensing programs provide potentially substantial savings, ease of deployment, flexible acquisition, numerous payment options, and other benefits such as Software Assurance.

Software Assurance Offering with Volume Licensing:
Software Assurance is an offering available with Microsoft Volume Licensing programs that helps you get the most from your software by providing greater value, assistance, and manageability. With Software Assurance, you can access training and deployment resources that enable employees to work more efficiently than ever. Software Assurance also allows your organization to acquire the right to use tomorrow's technology at today's prices, and allows you to spread payments annually instead of paying up front in one lump sum. Organizations with Software Assurance coverage are eligible to use new versions of the covered software that are made available during their term of coverage.

Academic, Charity, and Government Programs:
Microsoft also offers programs designed specifically for academic institutions, charitable organizations, and governments. These programs can provide the greatest potential savings to qualified organizations.
